Splish-Splash

The start of a new year. Can you believe it? We took off from Picnic Key and padded over to the Holiday Adventure Tours Marina across the bay to get water. The manager Jon Smiley was so nice. It required a dock exit but no problem. Jon even snapped our pic for their Facebook page.

Onward we took in the sights around Sanibel Island. Cool!

We stopped at the Baywatch Marina for a sandwich and beer. Then found out a Publix store was like a block away. Time to top off our food supply.

We hoped to camp on Bowtie Island but it was completely covered in mangroves with no access. The guidebook needs to be updated about this.

We ended up camping a few miles south.

On Thursday (1-2-2014) we shoved off into a horrendous Southerly wind that caused some big swells. Hard to control the yaks. Our cockpits were full of water from all the splashing aroundo. Spray skirts only do so much. Plus Marc’s new yak now has a slight leak from the skeg control slide. Should be an easy fix if we can ever find a tube if adhesive silicone.

We pulled into Vanderbilt Beach and walked across the street to the Lighthouse Motel but as luck would have it there was no vacancy. Hmmm….

We did have a nice conversation with Scott and his wife from Wisconsin. They are here vacationing. Cheers guys!

Now we are on a somewhat deserted beach camping. We got here late and just couldn’t go any farther safely. Tomorrow we hope to make Cannon Key.

Advance Around,

Marc and Jim

Makes you really appreciate those smooth paddling days when all goes well when you have days that challenge you in every way. But, you 2guys have seen worse and you’ll get some of those great paddling days again! As you well know, if it were easy, everyone would be doing it! Takes some kind of innate specialness and perseverance! Hang in ~ hang on ~ paddle on and around! 🙂

Glad you are making such progress but we had been hoping to see you in/near Sanibel Island. Maybe you’re not getting our emails! Buddy & Linda Morgan
